Benzeneethanol.
Phenethyl alcohol [60-12-8].
Packaging and storage— Preserve in tight,light-resistant containers, and store in a cool, dry place.
Identification— Transfer 1mLto a dry test tube, add 500µLof phenyl isocyanate (Caution—Phenyl isocyanate is a strong lacrimator),and heat on a steam bath for 5minutes.Cool,using ice if necessary, and induce crystallization by scratching the walls of the tube with a glass rod. After crystals have formed, add about 10mLof solvent hexane, heat to boiling for a few minutes, and filter the solution into a warm, dry test tube.Collect the crystals that form on a filter, and wash them with cool solvent hexane:the crystals of phenethyl carbanilate so obtained melt between 78and 80(see Melting Range or Temperature á741ñ).
Specific gravity á841ñ: between 1.017and 1.020.
Refractive index á831ñ: between 1.531and 1.534at 20.
Residue on ignition á281ñ Evaporate 10mLin a suitable crucible, and ignite to constant weight:the limit is 0.005%.
Chlorinated compounds— Wind a 1.5-×5-cm strip of 20-mesh copper gauze around the end of a copper wire.Heat the gauze in the nonluminous flame of a Bunsen burner until it glows without coloring the flame green.Permit the gauze to cool, and heat several times until a good coat of oxide has formed.Apply with a medicine dropper 2drops of Phenylethyl Alcohol to the cooled gauze, ignite, and permit it to burn freely in the air.Again cool the gauze, add 2more drops of Phenylethyl Alcohol, and burn as before.Continue this process until a total of 6drops has been added and ignited, and then hold the gauze in the outer edge of the Bunsen flame, adjusted to a height of about 4cm:no transient green color or other color is imparted to the flame.
Aldehyde— Shake 5mLwith 5mLof 1Nsodium hydroxide, and allow to stand for 1hour:no yellow color appears in the organic (top)layer.
Organic volatile impurities,Method IVá467ñ: meets the requirements.
